Unit for the Documentation and Study of the Greek War of Independence (EMTELE)
Director: professor Stephanos Papageorgiou

The Unit aims at gathering documentation and at researching fields related to the history of the Greek War of Independence. To this end, the Unit has created an e-Lexicon of the Greek War of Independence, which already comprises approximately 200 entries for political, administrative and military institutions, diplomatic acts, people, places etc. Furthermore, the Unit gathers both hard copies and digital documents of period (unpublished texts, archives, published oral narratives and interviews etc).
The creation of an electronic archive, the formation of a relevant bibliographical guide, as well as the writing of short studies and articles (all available online) belong to the main aims of the Unit. Its ultimate goal is the configuration of an online academic centre of dissemination and publication of resources relevant to this thematic field that may function as an archive as well as a research and teaching tool.

The creation of an e-library focused on the field of Public History
Academic research relevant to the field of Public History as well as social and cultural history.
The organization of post-graduate seminars and academic gatherings in collaboration with Greek and Foreign academic institutions.

Unit for Balkan, Ottoman and post-Ottoman Studies (BOPS)
Director: ass. professor Andreas Lyberatos

The research unit “Balkan, Ottoman and Post-Ottoman Studies” of KENI (Research Center for Modern History) succeeds “Ottoman, Colonial and Post-Colonial Studies” unit, which has focused its research on the history of Cyprus during three different periods (Ottoman, British-Colonial, and Independence) with main objectives the study of communal conflict and nationalism during the above-mentioned different frameworks, as well as the comparative study of Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot literature on the Cyprus question through the application of colonial and post-colonial studies approaches.
The aim of BOPS is to continue this research activity, but also to expand its frame of reference to the wider Ottoman and Balkan region and its research actions to the Balkan and Late Ottoman political, economic, social and cultural history, with an emphasis on the multiple transformations which signify the transition of Balkan societies to the modern era and the development of the relations of the region’s countries between them but also within the wider European and Global framework during the Late Ottoman and Post-Ottoman period”.

Unit for the Documentation and Study of the Greek Press (ETMIET)
Unit director: Dr Gioula Koutsopanagou

The aim of the Unit is to document the multi-faceted history of the Greek Press from the late 18th century to the present day and to correlate it with other national histories of the Press, as found in the relevant literature.
Within this context, the Unit has undertaken to create a database of the Greek Press both in Greece and Abroad, including newspapers and magazines, a “Register of Hellenic Journalists at home and abroad”, and archives of relevant bibliography, of personal interviews, and of personal archives and newspapers in digital form.
In addition the Unit seeks:

  1. To organise research groups for the purpose of in-depth thematic analysis based on an interdisciplinary approach
  2. To collaborate with professional press organisations and related academic and research institutions in Greece and abroad
  3. To organise scholarly discussions
  4. To publish research findings. In collaboration with Papazisis Publishers, the Unit has inaugurated a series under the general title of “History of the Greek Press: Documents, Testimonies and Studies”. As part of this series, we published (2006) a book in Greek by Babis Marketos – owner-publisher-editor of the National Herald (Ethnikos Keryx) – entitled (Oi Ellenoamerikanoi) “Greek-Americans: History of Greek Expats in America”.

Unit for the History of Migrant and Refugee Movements (EMIM)
Director: professor Lina Venturas

The Research Unit for the History of Migrant and Refugee Movements operates as an area of interdisciplinary research, production and transmission of knowledge, as well as an area of communication among those interested in global population movements and their impact on citizenship in the past and in the contemporary era. The Unit is part of the Research Center for Modern History. It aims at contributing to the integration of the history of population movements, diaspora and citizenship into the overall study of the past in the modern and contemporary era. By studying the history of migration, refugeedom and diasporas, by locating and examining relevant archives (documents, oral testimonies, audiovisual material etc.) and by diffusing knowledge on human mobility and the relations between the newly established with local and sedentary populations, the Unit attempts to contribute in a deeper understanding of the complexity of the causes, the characteristics and the consequences of population movements. Moreover, the Unit by mediating between the scientific community and a broader audience, aims at diffusing knowledge and an understanding of the ways political communities and collective representations are transformed.
