The Greek Experience Under Ottoman Rule

Sponsored by the Princeton University Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, this workshop on "The Greek Experience Under Ottoman Rule" follows on the success of the three earlier workshops (Santorini, 2007; Mytilene, 2010; Athens, 2013). Hosted at the Princeton Athens Center, the 2019 workshop is scheduled for September 3, 2019. It is designed to bring together graduate students and early career scholars who are working on the Greeks in Ottoman history and culture.
Considering the focus on the experience of the Greeks under Ottoman rule, prospective participants are encouraged to consider additional, comparative or interdisciplinary frameworks for papers, beyond the Ottoman context. In accordance with recent trends in history writing, such as transnational and international history, applicants might want to think about the scale of their work. Are they telling a local, a regional, or even a transnational or international story? And what are the connections among and across these levels?
Eligibility: Applicants must be current doctoral students or recent Ph.D. recipients who completed the degree in 2017 or later and do not have a current regular academic appointment. Workshops have drawn participants from Greece and Turkey, as well as other European countries and the United States.
Students from all humanities disciplines and the social sciences are welcome to apply.
Three nights of double occupancy accommodation (September 1-3, 2019) will be provided to all workshop participants. Participants will be responsible for their travel expenses to/from Athens.
Application: Applicants should submit (by email, no fax or hard copy) the following to the organizing committee in .doc or .docx format (no .pdf, please):
+ Abstract (400 words maximum) of a paper to be presented at the workshop.
+ Statement of motivation (200 words maximum) to participate in the workshop, reflecting on how the proposed paper relates to the dissertation- or research-in-progress, and situating the applicant’s project within his/her academic field(s).
+ Curriculum vitae, including the name and email address of one academic referee.
All papers and discussions will be in English. Papers must not exceed 30 minutes in presentation.
