kanarini anthrakoryxeio

Πώς απάντησαν οι θεράποντες των ανθρωπιστικών - κοινωνικών επιστημών στις επικρίσεις εναντίον των πανεπιστημίων ως ελιτίστικων ελεφάντινων πύργων, αδιάφορων για τις ανάγκες της κοινωνίας; Θα γίνει άραγε το Πανεπιστήμιο ένας χώρος όπου η «σχόλη» θα έχει εξαφανιστεί, ο δάσκαλος θα εκτελεί τον ρόλο του κοινωνικού λειτουργού που αναλαμβάνει την κοινωνικοποίηση των φοιτητών, του ειδικού που εφοδιάζει την οικονομία με καταρτισμένο ανθρώπινο δυναμικό και του κοινωνικού μηχανικού που κατασκευάζει έναν ιδεώδη ανθρωπότυπο; Θα μπορούσαμε να μιλήσουμε για το Πανεπιστήμιο αποφεύγοντας την τελεολογία των Δηλώσεων Αποστολής (Mission Statements), το πρότυπο των οποίων αντλήθηκε από τον κόσμο των επιχειρήσεων;

Eleni Andriakaina – Rosa Vasilaki, Conversations. The Promise of Humanities and Social Sciences, Athens: Pedio 2017.

conversationsWritten in a conversational and interactive form, the volume consists of seven texts attempting to shed light to issues arising in the everyday life of the university, in amphitheaters and seminar rooms, during the demanding, nonetheless pleasant game of questions and answers between teachers, colleagues and students.

The book revolves around three majors areas of interest:

1) the recent public turn in humanities and social sciences and the call of academics for engagement with a wider audience 2) the intellectuals’ long quest for the unity of theory and political practice as well as the dilemmas of spokespersonship and 3) the question of modernity as a fundamental sociological problem, its crises and critiques.

Chapter 5: Eleni Andriakaina, Public History and National Identity: The 1821 Revolution as metaphor for the ‘Greek crisis’

In 2011, while the causes of the Greek ‘crisis started becoming the subject of public controversy, a documentary series aired on Skai channel vowing to challenge nationalist and populist accounts of the 1821 Revolution. By popularizing the main arguments of modernization theory, the ‘1821’ documentary approached the past through the lens of ‘Cultural dualism’ –the clash between a ‘reformist’ and an ‘underdog’ culture – and operated as a metaphor for contemporary Greece. Via the study of the media spectacle and the ways the history of 1821 goes public, historical inquiry can reflect on the normative/descriptive complex of rival historical narratives, exercise itself in perspectival seeing and self-reflexitiy and move towards a history of the present.

Eleni Andriakaina, Who Remembers Metis? Practical Knowledge, High Modernism and the ‘Failures’ of Modernization

The paper enters into conversation with James C. Scott's study on High Modernism and his critique to scientism and utopian social engineering. In particular, it engages with the question How certain schemes to improve the human condition have failed, resulting in tragic unforeseen consequences. The paper inquires whether and how the critique of High Modernism could be appropriated to approach the problem of Greek modernity, that is the narratives of failed modernization. The main argument is that we could possibly exempt early Greek history from crude teleological accounts if we historicize the role of intellectuals and experts in the historical process by focusing not merely on their ideas and grand visions - i.e. on what they failed to achieve - but also on what they actually did, i.e. on the specific way they planned and attempted institutional modernization.

Eleni Andriakaina, The Promise of the 1821 Revolution and the Suffering Body. Some thoughts on Modernisation and Anti-intellectualism

How can we understand and interpret the popular narrative of the 1821 revolution that speaks for the suffering body of the fighter while it reproaches the “Frenchified heterochthons” and conveys a kind of anti-intellectualism (defined broadly and loosely by Merle Curti as “a suspicion of, opposition to, or derogation of intellectuals”)? The popular view of 1821 has its origins in the memoirs of the “freedom fighters” written after the War of Independence. Its main motifs travelled from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth century and lent themselves to multiple readings and various ideological uses. Although it has a socio-political content, it cannot be explained in terms of a grand narrative of class war, as some Marxist historians of the twentieth century argue; neither can it be understood in terms of the grand narrative of Greek modernisation, that is, as a survival from a previous stage of historical development, a relic from the past, even though it draws its motives from traditional sources and idealises the role of chieftains in the War of Independence. I suggest that we approach the anti-intellectualism of the early nineteenth century from an anti-essentialist perspective of Greek history that highlights the Janus-face of modernisation and the ambivalent nature of modern ideologies with regard to the relation between the intellectual and the people or the nation.
